Most schools look great on their website. The best way to find out what a school is really like is to visit, watch a kids' class and ask good questions. Here are 12 to bring with you.
About the Instructors
1. Who will actually teach my child?
Ask who teaches the kids' classes. Is it the head instructor, an assistant or a teen helper? Ask about their experience with children specifically.
2. Are instructors background-checked and trained in first aid?
A good school will answer this without hesitation.
3. How do you handle a child who is struggling or misbehaving?
Look for answers about patience, encouragement and redirection, not yelling or embarrassment.
About Classes
4. How are classes divided by age and skill?
Preschoolers, school-age kids and teens learn very differently. Separate classes are a good sign.
5. How many kids are in a class, and how many instructors?
Smaller ratios mean more attention for your child.
6. When does sparring or live practice start, and how is it supervised?
Ask about protective gear, rules for contact and how kids are paired.
7. Can I watch a class or take a free trial?
Most good schools welcome both. Be wary if they don't.
About Money
8. What is the monthly tuition, and what does it include?
Ask how many classes per week are included.
9. What other fees are there?
Registration, uniforms, belt testing, gear, tournaments. Get the full list. See How Much Do Kids' Martial Arts Classes Cost?
10. Do I have to sign a contract? How do I cancel?
Ask whether you can go month-to-month, and get cancellation terms in writing.
About Progress
11. How does belt testing work?
How often are tests, what do they cost, and does every child pass automatically? Read How Belt Ranks Work.
12. How will I know how my child is doing?
Look for schools that give parents regular feedback, not just at testing time.
