The first class can feel like a big deal for kids, and for parents too. Knowing what to expect makes it easier for everyone. Here's a simple guide.

Before Class

What should my child wear?

For a trial class, comfortable athletic clothes are usually fine: a T-shirt and sweatpants or athletic shorts without zippers or buttons. Most schools train barefoot. If you sign up, the school will tell you which uniform to buy.

What should we bring?

  • A water bottle with their name on it
  • Hair ties for long hair
  • Short, clean fingernails and toenails
  • No jewelry, or remove it before class

When should we arrive?

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so you can fill out forms, meet the instructor and let your child see the room before class starts.

During Class

Most kids' classes follow a similar pattern:

  • Bow in. Students line up and bow to the instructor to start class.
  • Warm-up. Jumping jacks, stretches, running games.
  • Basics. Stances, punches, kicks or grappling moves, broken into small steps.
  • Drills or games. Practicing with pads, partners or fun games.
  • Bow out. A short wrap-up and a bow to finish.

New students often get extra help from an assistant instructor, or start at the end of the line where they can watch others.

Helping a Nervous Child

  • Watch a class together first if your child is anxious.
  • Talk about what will happen using the steps above.
  • Stay where they can see you, if the school allows parents to watch.
  • Let them start slowly. It's okay if they just watch for a few minutes.
  • Praise effort, not perfection.

After Class

Ask your child what they liked best. Kids who come out smiling, showing you a new kick, have usually found a good fit. If they didn't love it, try a different school or style before giving up on martial arts. Many kids just need the right instructor.
